Very interesting, and this has clarified the tension between *is* (~epistemic) and *ought* (~motivational) for me.

It also made me wonder whether we likewise defer to *motivational* superiors—eg priests or, more widely, spiritual or moral authorities—to tell us what we ought (not) to do. Observation seems to support this, and explain in part why we can be simultaneously selfish and cooperative.
